Devon Grows Flax

What's it all about?

Devon Grows Flax is helping communities learn heritage skills and connect to each other through flax. There are lots of ways to get involved from growing, retting and processing flax to toolmaking, researching, spinning and weaving linen. Check our project activities below and sign up to our mailing list to find out more.

Devon Grows Flax

Devon Grows Flax is a collaboration of TTT and Liflad CiC, made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to expand our Totnes Grows Flax pilot and are able to offer the activities outlined below.

The Devon Grows Flax project aims to uncover, revive and embed heritage flax culture throughout Devon. It will enable communities to learn heritage skills, to connect to each other and the land through shared experiences.

The project will be carried out through various events, workshops and exhibitions that enable communities to take part in flax growing, processing, tool making, spinning and weaving.

The four key project areas include:

  • Creating Devon Flax Towns
  • Undertaking Heritage Research
  • Developing Flax in Schools
  • Creating a Community Cloth

Why?

By connecting communities to land, culture, craft and heritage and each other, the project hopes to:

  • Create a shared understanding of our relationship with products and textiles today.
  • Create shared experiences to cultivate transformational thinking
  • Build resilient futures for Devon
