Transition Streets
Taking part in Transition Streets supports you to imagine and create other ways that you can make your street a more caring, sharing, greener place to live. It creates more caring, more sharing and more connected streets and helps people reduce their carbon footprint and cost of living through taking practical action together.

Bringing the community together, one street at a time.
Transition Streets was created in 2009 by Transition Town Totnes (TTT). In the first phases of the project around 500 households in Totnes cut an average of £570 from their annual household bills and 1.3 tonnes from their carbon footprint. Around 38% of them - homeowners, tenants, community living and sheltered housing residents - had low disposable incomes. The project went on to inspire similar projects all across the UK and in 8 other countries, with TTT providing a support package for other communities and inspiring what is now a well-established Transition Streets programme in both the U.S. and Australia. Following a recent relaunch of the project in Totnes and a lot of interest from across the UK we are now planning to roll it out more widely. Check out our Crowdfund campaign here.

How does Transition Streets work?
To take part, you and your neighbours form a group of 6-8 households. You meet together over a few months to explore a range of topics including: Energy, Food, Travel, Water and Resource Use .
Homes reduce their carbon footprint and cut their household bills by taking simple actions. Connections are formed, friendships are made, more sharing takes place and all sorts of unexpected, wonderful things arise.

What wonderful things could you and your neighbours do together?
Garden Share
Want to garden but don't have the space? Have a garden but no time or energy to tend it? A garden share with your neighbours could be the answer for you.
Dinner Clubs
So simple this one! Instead of all cooking and heating our homes separately, sharing meals saves energy on heating and cooking while also building your street friendships and connections.
Ready Steady Cook
A neighbourly cookery session with a difference. Go with the flow as you bring together your neighbours, your random ingredients, your skills and recipes, and learn to reduce food waste together.
Sharing Shelves
There are loads of creative and fun ways for neighbours to share. From book libraries in disused telephone boxes to swapping shelves on street corners and in bus stops.
Thermal imaging parties
Thermal imaging provides a hands on way of seeing where heat is being lost from your home. Why not make it into a party, do it with your neighbours and get the whole street involved?
Edible Streets
Why have grass verges and ornamental shrubs on your street when you can grow and share fruit, veg, herbs and flowers?
Draught proofing parties
Some homes, even fairly modern ones, can lose as much as 30% of their heat through draughts. Instead of tackling this alone, why not club together with your neighbours and make it into a social event.
