From Local Action to Global Movement
From Local Action to Global Movement

Our story starts right here in Totnes, a small market town in South Devon. Sparking from talks about peak oil, projects quickly emerged looking at building local level community resilience.

What began as a handful of local conversations has grown into a movement spanning the globe, helping communities everywhere respond to climate change, ecological decline, economic uncertainty and social inequality.

Another Future Is Possible
Another Future Is Possible

In September 2006, Transition Town Totnes was launched and kickstarted a movement around the world. Our first projects, including the Totnes Pound, Garden Share and the nut tree planting gained quick attention.

In 2007, we formed as charity and in 2008 Transition Network was founded to support the development of new groups wherever they arose.

In 2008, the Transition Handbook was published followed by the film In Transition 1.0.

In 2010, we published the Energy Descent Action Plan, a community-consulted vision into a 2030 future for Totnes beyond peak oil. Projects continued to grow out of the working groups, and over 65 projects have come through TTT as of 2026. The Transition Movement has since grown into over 950 initiatives across the world.
