Here are the most common queries we receive about our group.
How can I contact the Forum?
ACTING CHAIR: Julian Wright 01803 866797
VICE-CHAIR: Cllr Judy Westacott, MBE 07967 921897
SECRETARY: Martin Gilbert 01803 862463
When do you meet?
We meet every second Wednesday of the month - generally at the Guildhall at 7pm. Forthcoming meetings are mentioned on this website and in our
minutes. Please contact us (see above) for details.
Who can participate?
The Forum consists of representatives of a wide range of community groups
in Totnes, but members of the public may attend all meetings. Decisions are
generally made by consensus of all present but a contentious issue may be
resolved by a vote restricted to appointed representatives of community
groups.
Any community organisation that has an interest in traffic and transport
issues in Totnes and/or the surrounding 17 parishes may nominate a
representative to join the forum.
What topics do you discuss?
We discuss any issue that is of concern to residents. Anyone may propose a
topic. We prefer to focus on matters that we have the capacity to influence or
resolve.
How do you influence local transport policy?
Members include County and District Councillors (including members of the
Highways and Traffic Orders Committee), Highways Officers, Public Transport
Service Providers, Town & Parish Councillors.
The Forum has actively participated in - or organised - several
consultation exercises to guide council policy - including the High Street
Consultation and the South Hams Development Plan consultation.
What have you done in past meetings?
We organised a major two year consultation exercise to propose solutions to
High Street Traffic problems. Recent roadworks have incorporated some of these
proposals in a modified form.
We have responded to a consultation on the Development Plan for Totnes
being drafted by South Hams District Council.
We
have advised local authorities about a wide range of road safety, public transport and sustainable transport issues.
We recently organised a hustings in which the parliamentary candidates of all 5 main political parties participated.
What are your current projects?
We have helped create a Cycle Group and are working with them to support a
cycle path to Littlehempston and improved cycle parking facilities in
Totnes.
We are supporting the Totnes Rickshaw Company - which is promoting
sustainable public transport using rickshaws and community busses.
We are supporting the Totnes Car Share Scheme that is being developed by
Moorcars.
We are promoting Residents Parking Schemes.
We have helped draft the Transport Section of TTT's Energy Descent Action
Plan for the town.
What projects might happen in the future?
Members and attendees may suggest any projects - but projects will only
happen if members have the time and ability to enable them to happen.
We are especially interested in affordable sustainable solutions to the
town's traffic problems that will enable lower income families to retain access
to essential services in the age after cheap oil.
Who are your partners and what groups do you interact with?
