An Open day at Landmatters: transition & permaculture in action in our local community
An introduction to this inspiring local low-impact community. Come and find out how this community grew up in the South Hams over the last 4 years and are transitioning their way into a post-oil future. See how they live, grow their food, get their energy, and how we can all use permaculture in our everyday lives. Enjoy a day out in the beautiful countryside, have a guided tour of the community, see the low-impact dwellings, walk in the woods. Bring food, frisbees and cake to share, tea provided!
Sunday 2 August Ride Out
A sunny day and a perfect one for another of our monthly ride outs. Julian had promised wide views and the Church House Inn at Rattery as our half way stop. We met at our usual spot outside the Dartmouth Inn on The Plains then proceeded up the hill to The Bay Horse to meet other pedal pushers. Why we are always adjacent to public houses as our meeting points is somewhat of a mystery to me. Perhaps a long cycle group tradition? Present were Julian, Rosemary, Jim, Ian, Steve, Ray, Lucie and Michael. Why there weren't more on such a lovely day is a puzzle. Perhaps the thought of Hapers Hill to the top of Windmill Down had put people off. Its a long steady pull or push I can tell you! But once up there on the ridge it was worth it with magnificent views on both sides. Passing Blakemore on the right and crossing the A385 at Tigley. We dropped down into the tiny hamlet of Brooking where a gardener in the hamlet was treated to the sight of various intrepid cyclists fording the swift flowing Bidwell Brook! Only just in some cases! Now the ride went cross country along a path that in normal summer conditions would be enchanting through woodland and meadow. But due to the rather damp conditions of this season the path was what can we say exceedingly muddy and more cyclo cross that cycle ride. However the sight of The Church House Inn at Rattery restored our spirits and we enjoyed restorative beverages and lunch in the pub garden. Then we were off again on a gently undulating ride again with superb views from rattery to Huxams Cross along the cycle path through Dartington and back to the Plains. Thanks to Julian for plotting a delightful and in places unorthordox ride out. Next ride out is Sunday 6 Sep led by Ian.
