One of the central themes of the transition model is the realisation that we have lost many of the basic skills taken for granted by every previous generation – to grown, gather, preserve and cook local and seasonal food; to repair clothes and household goods; to make and mend rather than throw away; to work with local materials such as wood and clay for items of function as well as beauty.
We think that we need to relearn these skills to prepare for an energy scarce and relocalised future. A further element is to provide important skills for those involved in organisation and delivery of transition projects such as facilitation skills, project management, leadership, conflict resolution and so on.
This project is informally already underway with a number of skills-related workshops already offered through the TTT programme of events e.g.
- Make your own natural paints: Earth, Paints, Plasters & Pigments
- Knitting with recycled materials
- Make your own radio show
- Straw bale building
- Clay plastering
The first TTT organic gardening course has just started, with 15 enthusiastic attendees on a 6 month programme.
However we feel this project needs a co-ordinator to realise its full potential, for which funding and/or volunteers will be sought:
Aim & objectives
To organize and deliver a comprehensive range of quality, enjoyable training that will equip the local community with the skills it needs for a successful energy descent through:
- A variety of delivery means such as workshops, events, formal training, apprenticeships, home groups
- Provision of affordable options for all
- Provision of access for all community groups including those typically excluded
- Creating partnerships with existing training organisations where appropriate (we do not aim to duplicate)
We also aim to create a methodology for measuring changes in behaviour resulting from engagement with TTT and the re-skilling courses in particular. This will be a key piece of work to assist other Transition projects to measure how effective their oen programmes are.
