Grow Heathrow - A new model for Transition?
Public Meeting on Wednesday 18th January 8.00pm in Totnes Methodist Church
The Transition Movement began in Totnes and has spread to hundreds of communities around the World. But these Transition Initiatives take many different forms and spring from diverse sources. Transition Heathrow grew from the successful campaign against a third runway at Heathrow Airport when activists and local residents occupied an abandoned and derelict market garden site in Sipson, one of the villages that would have been bulldozed and tarmacced under plans for the new runway. 30 tonnes of rubbish was cleared and the site transformed into a beacon of community strength and a great example of how to live sustainably.
The project aims to return the Berkeley Nurseries site back to it’s intended purpose – a thriving market garden providing the community with locally produced, organic fruit and vegetables.
The site is a hub for local residents and environmental activists to share knowledge and practical skills such as organic gardening, permaculture design, bicycle maintenance and wood and metal work. Grow Heathrow uses solar and wind power and is completely off-grid. Water is collected from greenhouse roofs to feed plants and heated by a rocket stove for domestic use.
Transition Heathrow has also become a vital hub for a wide range of environmental campaigns and has hosted gatherings for
Climate Camp, No Tar Sands Network, Transition Network and many more.
Ian Westmoreland from Grow Heathrow will explain how Grow Heathrow came about, their plans for the future and what lessons the Transition Movement can learn from this exciting initiative.
